Use Plot in Codex

Connect Plot to Codex with the Plot plugin or MCP server to read tasks, update status, and log progress while Codex works.

Connect Plot to Codex so it can work from your real tasks. Codex can read a task before it starts, update its status, leave progress comments, and save plans as Plot documents.

Prefer the command line? The Plot CLI works with Codex too.

Before you start

You need:

  • Codex in the ChatGPT desktop app, or the Codex CLI.
  • A Plot account with access to the workspace you want to connect.

Codex in the ChatGPT desktop app

Codex uses the plugins you connect in ChatGPT. Follow Use Plot in ChatGPT to connect Plot once, then start a new Codex session. Type @ to select Plot, or describe the task and let Codex use it.

Install the Plot plugin in the Codex CLI

The plugin adds the Plot server and a skill that teaches Codex how to work in Plot.

  1. Add the Plot marketplace:

    codex plugin marketplace add plot-hq/agent-plugins
  2. Start codex and run /plugins.

  3. Open the Plot marketplace tab, select Plot, and install it.

  4. Sign in when Codex asks. In the Plot window, choose your workspace and select Authorize.

Add the MCP server manually

To add only the server, run:

codex mcp add plot --url https://mcp.plot.app/mcp
codex mcp login plot

Codex saves the server in ~/.codex/config.toml.

What Codex can do in Plot

Once connected, Codex can:

  • Read a task, its comments, and its project before it starts work.
  • Update task status, assignees, labels, and dependencies.
  • Create task trees for a plan, with subtasks and dependencies.
  • Leave comments with progress, blockers, and handoff notes.
  • Create documents for plans, briefs, and decisions.

Disconnect Plot

  • Plugin: run /plugins, select Plot, and choose Uninstall plugin.
  • Manual server: run codex mcp logout plot, then codex mcp remove plot.
  • ChatGPT desktop app: disconnect Plot in ChatGPT, as described in Use Plot in ChatGPT.

Troubleshoot

Plot doesn't appear in Codex

Start a new Codex session. Codex loads plugins and MCP servers when a session starts.

Codex asks you to approve every change

That prompt comes from Codex. Because Plot tools can change your data, Codex asks before it writes. You can change this in your Codex approval settings.
